Pastor Chuck Smith began welcoming hippies into the Southern Californian church he pastored in the 1960s. When some complained that the "dirty young people" would ruin the new carpet, Pastor Chuck responded, "Then we'll remove the carpet." The revival that began became known as the "Jesus Movement." From its humble beginnings, the ministry of Calvary Chapel has expanded around the world. From Austria to Australia, Budapest to Boston, South Africa to South Carolina, Ireland to Idaho, Jerusalem to Japan, Moscow to Mexico. Calvary Chapel pastors, churches, and Bible colleges are following Pastor Chuck’s example of expositional Bible teaching: “Simply teaching the Bible simply.”
Calvary Chapel of Joplin began in 1989 and to this day follows the same vision of teaching the Bible verse-by-verse, chapter-by-chapter and book-by-book. Since our first Sunday morning service, we’ve been declaring Jesus as Lord through the pages of the Scriptures.
